A Volunteer Trip to Peru

December 11th, 2009

Surrounding Lima, Peru the capital, are many neighborhoods. Most of these neighborhoods started as collections of shacks that people put up upon moving in from the rural areas. One such neighborhood is Comas. Now it is built up and part of the structure of Lima.Years ago it was a destitute area and I spent 3 weeks there doing volunteer work for an aid agency. It was difficult work but enjoyable in that people were helped. My passable Spanish fluency helped somewhat in communicating with the people. It is incredible watching areas grow from poverty to middle class status over the years. It shows how improvements can always be made. Comas, is one such example.
