1080p plasma hdtv

I was wondering out there if anybody has actually sat down and watched a movie on a 720p TV and then done the same thing on a 1080p plasma HDTV? Of course, you have to use Blu-ray for the task. Is there any discernable difference? Is the picture quality really that important. I’m starting to wonder if you’d be better of spending your extra money on a great home theater system and getting one of the lower end LCD or plasma TVs instead of shelling out several extra grand for the slightly nicer picture and relying on the stock speakers on the TV. I mean a lot of action movies are built to provide sound all around you to make you feel like you’re really there.
