Red wine and the need for decent red wine glasses

September 17th, 2010

So what wine is best for a picnic? This, to me, is a matter of taste and whether you have sufficient means at your disposal to keep a white wine nice and cool. If you haven’t, then plump for a nice easy going red like a Fitou or an Italian Chianti. This red always goes down nicely with a little bit of strong cheese. My wife is Spanish, so we are never short of some tasty Manchego, which is similar to strong Cheddar. With a good bottle of red wine, should be some decent red wine glasses. But should you really be taking glass on a picnic? It is heavy and vulnerable, and often gets damaged. I often take some plastic glasses with me, which are cheap to buy and strong. The trade off is that there can often be a slight loss of taste. What I like about wine glasses is the shape that suits different types of wine. A red wine glass tends to be large and spacious to allow the flavor to circulate. A white wine tends to be typically smaller as the flavours are generally more subtle.
