Why can’t my comforter be machine washed?

November 27th, 2009

A duvet comforter is a type of bedding – a soft flat bag traditionally filled with down or feathers, or a combination of both. Duvets originated in rural Europe and were made from the down feathers of the Eider Duck, known for its usefulness as an insulator. The down of birds is a layer of fine feathers found under the tougher exterior feathers. Very young birds are clad in only down. Powder down is a specialized type of down found only in a few groups of birds. Down is a fine thermal insulator and padding, used in goods such as jackets, bedding, pillows and sleeping bags. Because comforters are usually filled with Eider Duck feathers, they can’t be machine washed, they must be dry cleaned, so that the feathers don’t clump together when they get wet.
