The Atkins Diet is an example of a low-carbohydrate diet for rapid weight loss. This diet can produce seemingly miraculous results, as you can drop weight very quickly on this diet. And your appetite for food drastically decreases as well, so you feel full faster. The controversy arises when it comes to the question of sustaining this diet for the long-term or for using this diet as a means to maintain your weight for life. Human beings need carbohydrates in order to maintain healthy body function. According a US government study, if you eat 2,000 calories per day, you should have at least 250 grams of carbohydrates per day. Whether this is consistent with the Atkins dietary guidelines for weight loss and weight maintenance remains to be seen, subject to additional research.
