In situations which require the use of specialized hardware or software the FireWire ports on laptop computers are often the best way to meet these requirements especially with audio data transfer. The speed of which these devices need in order to function as expected will basically be able to do so with the faster setups such as FireWire. Since even some of the budget models of good laptops under 200 will be able to provide this type of setup it opens up the doors to many would be recording enthusiast. The speed aspect is what will typically create the highly noticeable differences in sound quality overall and therefore making this the best way to go for many who require this.
