The Photomaton
December 29th, 2009
Anatol Josephewitz or Josepho was from Siberia, and in the 1920s he developed the modern photo booths that we see in malls and shopping centers around the world. As a child, Anatol was interested in photography, and when he was old enough he traveled to Berlin where he was hired as a photographer’s apprentice. He created a fast inexpensive way of taking pictures that was affordable to the average person. By 1925, he had relocated to New York Citywhere he opened his Photomaton on Broadway. A strip of 8 photos cost 25 cents, and there was even an attendant to help patrons use the booth.
