Effective Email Marketing

Since we decided to take the majority of our advertising and marketing costs and spend it on Internet ads and the like, I am wondering if there is any type of research being done on the effectiveness of this program. Of course, from the business owners standpoint I like that email marketing is an incredible percentage off what we used to spend in mass mailings, but does it have the same effect? Do people really take notice of the email or once it ends up in their mailbox do they quickly put it in the trash bin without taking a moment to open it up?
